Who Minds Your BusinessHow we meet the challenges facing us in the workplace today will determine if we will be in the workplace of tomorrow. An awareness of exactly what our business is and who we are will provide us with the tools we need. Mindfulness is not a topic normally associated with business training, but it is crucial to the long term success of any company. Defined as "paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally," mindfulness is an effective tool for understanding the nature of relationships within a company; between customers and employees, employees and managers, and managers and executives. It also examines the role business plays in the community and how acting in a clear and responsible way is economically beneficial to all of us. Achieving and maintaining successful business relationships is critical in today's competitive environment. The skills with which our employees interact with our customers, vendors, suppliers and each other, have a major impact on out financial sustainability. "To be aware of a single shortcoming in oneself is more useful than to be aware of a thousand in someone else." Customer service is the cornerstone of any business operation. Learning to work with internal and external customers, developing long term relationships, and knowing our priorities allows us to establish a reputation as a business of reliability and integrity. Earning our customer's trust has to be our primary goal. But mindfulness is not limited to customer awareness. We must begin to ask our customers, our employees, and ourselves the question, “What do you need?” When we begin to address the issues that frequently go unnoticed in our workplace, it becomes possible to work together in a new way leading to increased productivity and profitability. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit."
